The Georgia legislature, dominated by Democrats,
unsurprisingly voted to make Maddox (the Democrat) Georgia's governor.
So that's the long and fascinating story of how Lester Maddox, who failed to
win a plurality of votes in either the Democratic primary or the general
election, nevertheless became Georgia's 82nd governor.
By the
early 1970's, Callaway had relocated to Colorado and was serving as chairman
and president of Crested Butte Mountain Resort. He served as secretary of
the army in the Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford administrations and in 1980 he
successfully ran for a Colorado Senate seat. PHOTO:
Things get really ugly at the Pickrick as the future governor of Georgia
brandishes a pistol to chase a black man off the restaurant grounds.
His son, Lester Junior, is carrying a pick handle, known as a Pickrick
Drumstick. Sadly, replicas of these Pickrick Drumsticks were sold to
diners as souvenirs.
